Description
A sport of the popular Rheingold Arborvitae, Fire Chief Arborvitae is also a dwarf but has more intense coloration and is less prone to splitting. Grows 3 to 4 feet tall and wide featuring sprays of outstanding bright golden-yellow foliage in the spring that gradually turns orange as cooler temperatures arrive and to a deeper orange red in winter.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a rounded mound 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, the Fire Chief Arborvitae is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings, as a low hedge, or to frame entryways in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Also nice as a solo or mixed with other plants in combination container gardens. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and orange theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 3 feet apart for solid hedges; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Being North American natives plants, Arborvitae are very easy to grow and care for. They are adaptable to many soil types including red clay and like full sun to part shade. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil but don’t like an overly dry site. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy soil or standing water is problematic. Amend heavy clay soils with bagged top soil or other organic matter to ensure good drainage. Maintenance is minimal with very little if any pruning ever required.
