Description
Not too big, not too small…the perfect Butterfly Bush!
Our favorite of all the blue flowering dwarf butterfly bushes, Lo & Behold Blue Chip produces LOADS of honey-scented, 3 to 4 inch long spikes of lavender-blue flowers from late spring to frost in our gardens – and the flowers don’t require deadheading. That said, sometimes we’ll deadhead the ones we have growing in pots, which are situated in sitting areas where plants will be viewed from close up. Whether you choose to deadhead or not, the flowers just keep coming and coming all season long on bushes that are about 3 feet tall and maybe 4 feet wide. Both the butterflies and hummingbirds will thank you for planting this one, but the deer won’t!
Landscape & Garden Uses
We have Blue Chip growing in both garden beds and pots in our landscape. In the ground, its 3 foot height and 3.5 to 4 foot width make it an ideal choice for smaller garden spaces, where larger growing butterfly bush won’t fit. In containers it doesn’t grow quite as large, maybe 2 feet tall by 2 feet wide or so. That said, we’d recommend a larger pot of at least 15 inches or more in diameter. Ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or massed in landscape borders, flowering shrub borders and perennial gardens. A natural choice for butterfly and hummingbird gardens, blue theme gardens, and the Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 2.5 to 3 feet apart for solid hedges or mass plantings; 7 feet or more for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Butterfly Bushes is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Lo & Behold Blue Chip Butterfly Bush is exceptionally easy to grow. It thrives in full to mostly sun and isn’t too picky about soil type, provided the soil is well-drained and of average fertility. At least 6 hours of direct sun per day is recommended for best flowering. As with so many other plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause problems with the roots.
