Description
Fast growing, fragrant flowers, colorful foliage – what more can we ask for in a hedge shrub? Meet Olive Martini Elaeganus; the perfect shrub for a super-dense, impenetrable privacy hedge or barrier. Leathery evergreen leaves of olive green bordered with a creamy golden-yellow highlight Olive Martini when used as a hedge or as a specimen plant. Orange-brown twigs contrast nicely with the leaves and deepen in color as colder weather sets in in the fall.
Apart from the colorful foliage, this plant is also interesting for its almost invisible but very fragrant flowers. They are tiny and appear from late summer to early autumn. They have a lovely, sweet perfume that is distributed especially on sunny and warm afternoons and evenings. The flowers are followed by edible, deep red oval fruits that taste like sweet dark cherries. It is best to let the fruits ripen well, which is when they begin to fall from the plant.
Olive Martini was originally found by Christian Vivies in Toulouse, France, as a natural mutation of Elaeagnus x ebbingei.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense rounded mound 10 to 15 feet tall and wide (depending on pruning), the fast growing Olive Martini Elaeagnus is most useful to create quick privacy hedges and screens. You can allow it to grow natural or prune to a more formal shape. Also makes a nice specimen, grouping or background in large landscape beds. A fine addition to yellow theme gardens, fragrance gardens, and bird and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 6 to 7 feet apart for solid hedges; 16 feet apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6a, where this Elaeagnus variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Elaeagnus is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full sun to part shade. As with so many other shrubs it does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil, which can be problematic. Established plants are exceptionally drought tolerant. Elaeagnus prefers full to mostly sun however will tolerate a fair amount of shade. Foliage is more dense with more sun.

I’m starting off by saying “I Love My Olive Martini!” It arrived fast, for which I was very grateful. I wanted it to replace a pear tree that was destroyed by a recent ice storm. The magnificent method in which it was packaged was so impressive, and the shrub looked just like the photo! It’s doing so well! I think it loves it here! I can see it from my back window; it makes my heart warm. Love the attention you paid in picking it out for me!! I’ll definitely be ordering other items throughout the year! Thanks so much!—————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

I saw this shrub on youtube.com and for almost 2 years tried to find this shrub in local nurseries and online. This year I got lucky and found WBG had it available. I was really happy and ordered 4 shrubs, 1-gallon size. they are extremely well packed and the shrubs were alive, no damage from transit and are healthy and good quality. as soon as I got these 4 into the ground, i placed another order for 4 more. I was so impressed. My second order also arrived very well and securely packed and shrubs alive and in good healthy condition. the leaves on the shrub look healthy and strong. I am very happy with my purchases. it was a little more than what i budgeted for but this was a type of shrub i wanted for my back border (100 feet) of my yard for almost 2 years. WBG had better prices compared to other online sites and stronger positive reviews posted by their customers compared to other websites. the containers were also clearly marked with name of shrub. and the orders arrived quickly, on a Friday so I could plant them into the ground on Saturday. Perfect timing. The shrubs will probably take a few years to become a tall hedge. All 8 shrubs are in the ground in full sun location. They look little and cute right now. I hope they will grow happily and form a nice hedge for me. If I need any other types of shrubs, I would come back to WBG. Thank you WBG!—————————–Hi VL, Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Olive Martini Elaeagnus. We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come!
