Description
Boasting handsome dark maroon purple foliage year round, Purple Daydream is a dwarf Loropetalum that produces LOADS of vibrant, almost-red flowers on a dense spreading mound to only 2 to 3 feet in height with a spread of 3 to 4 feet. The flowers are heavy in late winter into spring and repeat lighter in fall. As with all other Loropetalums the deer won’t touch it!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing naturally to about 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 wide, or kept smaller with occasional pruning, the Purple Daydream Loropetalum is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or mass plantings, or in straight or staggered rows as a hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Its smaller size makes it a good fit for pots, planters and other containers. The year round deep purple foliage contrasts nicely with plants that have yellow, light green, grey or other light colored foliage or flowers. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, Asian theme gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 4 feet apart for solid hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Loropetalum variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. Requires a well-lit space for overwintering indoors.
Growing Preferences
Purple Daydream Loropetalum is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. Foliage is more dense in full sun. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Established plants are exceptionally drought tolerant. When established, plants are exceptionally drought tolerant requiring little if any supplemental irrigation. Requires no pruning, however responds very well to almost any amount of it.

I bought this plant two years ago and have been so happy to see how beautiful has become. I originally bought the normal size Chinese fringe plant from a local store on a splurge purchase, just because I thought it was really pretty (I normally do my research before just buying from a store). Anyway, I realized after getting home with it that that plant was definitely not going to have the space it needed, so that lead me on a search to find a smaller variety, which lead me here.
After buying and planting this one, I was a little worried because we got a late spring frost. Wilson Brothers was great, I contacted them and sent pictures of the plant and they responded immediately, explaining that the plant may have just gotten a little shocked from the cold and that it would bounce back and man did it! Since then it has done amazing!
I love the purple leaves (which seem to be a little more reddish in central Texas) and the flowers it gets. I planted it next to some bright green nandinas and the opposite colors really pop. It’s super easy to care for, honestly once established, I just let it be and it flourishes. I can’t recommend one of these enough. If you have a smaller space and but love the look of the Chinese Fringe Flower, this is an excellent pick. I’ve included pictures from two years ago and now, just so you can see it’s growth.

Plants arrived in excellent condition. I was really surprised and impressed how they were sealed for shipping. Carriers are rough on packages and even though they were all tossed around there was not soil spilled from the pots. Plants were healthy and ready to be planted. ———————– WBG Reply: Hi Donnie – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Purple Daydream Loropetalum and for the compliments regarding our packaging. Since the carriers seem to be more in a hurry these days, and handling packages a little less carefully, in Fall 2018 we are going to an even more rigid box that is twice the thickness of our present boxes. We’re all about providing the best products with the best packaging possible. Hope you enjoy the Purple Daydreams and let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. We’re at your service. – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
The plants arrived in perfect condition, full and healthy. I’m back to order another one to complete my planting bed. The three I received are planted among Wee Willie (1-2′ dwarf emerald green) boxwood that are just beautiful together! But, I hope they are compatible soil mates and I would appreciate your thoughts as I want to keep them thriving and happy together. ——– WBG Reply: Hi Cindy – Thanks so much for taking the to provide your review and for the compliments. Loropetalum and Boxwood have similar moisture preferences: a well drained but moist soil. Neither like constantly soggy or wet soil. Both do well in soils of average fertility. Both will thrive in similar soil pH, though boxwoods aren’t as acid-loving as loropetalum. The pH range that both will appreciate is between 6.0 to 6.5. Most average garden soils range between 6.0 to 7.0. That said, to be sure, you can always use a soil pH test kit or probe to check the pH, then adding soil sulfur to acidify soil or lime to sweeten soil (make more alakline) if necessary to adjust pH. You can find more details for adjusting soil pH by clicking on the “How To Plant…” links under the Planting & Care tab on any plant page in our website. The plants arrived quickly and looked great! This was my first time ordering live plants online but was very pleased with the product and shipping! ———– WBG Reply: Hi Laura – Thanks so much for your business and your review. We’re glad to hear you were pleased with the plants and the shipping, and that you chose us:-) We’ve been in the nursery business since 1989…but I remember when we started contemplating shipping our plants through the mail. We are extremely quality-conscious folks so, therefore, were worried about the shipping process…that plants would get damaged during transit. So we went to the drawing board and designed a packaging system that we still use to this day, and it works…well…99.999% of the time. Occasionally the carrier will mishandle a package and there’ll be damage…but FedEx guarantees against damages. This allows us to immediately ship out a replacement order in the rare event there is damage. Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with.
